Lethe is one of the mythological rivers of the underground (Hades), river of forgetfulness. After entering that river all past experiences are erased, forgotten. In her project "Lethe-Space of Drawing" Monika Weiss invites children to enter the space of drawing, its interior, and to forget, like after entering the river of oblivion, about everything, which is situated outside of it. Together with the artist the children enter the space filled with sounds of the voices of other children, water, wind and singing. The ground of the space of drawing is covered with white canvas. Children, participants of the project, remain with the artist as long or as short as they want, making the drawing, or, simply, spending time inside image/drawing, taking place in their presence and with their participation. Suspended from the ceiling, a video camera transmits from the "bird’s view" the image of what is happening in the space of drawing. This image is projected live from a video projector, which the participants can observe on a screen, suspended from the wall. This way a journey begins, within both individual and communal space of drawing.

Monika Weiss

Monika Weiss, New York-based Polish artist, through drawing, performance, video and installation, creates environments, which relate to the body and to the tension that characterizes the specific relation between culture and biology. In her drawings and multi-media installations, combined with performance, the artist relates to the corporeality of the practice of drawing, which she combines with the references to the ancient, such as in the "Ennoia" series, predominantly antique and medieval (Christian) symbols and concepts about the world and the human being. She realizes also works, such as in her "Intervals" series, drawing spaces, into which visitors, especially children and teens, can enter and fill with their own actions.

In 2004 Weiss works in her "Vessels" and "Intervals" series, realized among others with sound artist Stephen Vitiello, were presented in two-person exhibition with the works in "Infinity Kisses" series by the legend of the American contemporary art, Carolee Schneemann. New works by Weiss are currently on view in her solo exhibition Phlegethon/Milczenie in Inter-Galerie, Potsdam, Germany.

Monika Weiss graduated in painting and drawing from the Warsaw Academy of Fine Arts in 1990. Wladyslawa Strzeminskiego w Lodzi, 1994-1995. In New York Weiss exhibited in Chelsea Art Museum, 2003 and 2004; El Museo del Barrio, 2003; Diapason Gallery, 2002.
